Celebrating Love and Inclusivity: My First BSL Wedding Videography Experience

I'm thrilled to share an extraordinary experience that touched my heart deeply. As a Wedding Videographer (amongst other things!), I've had the privilege of witnessing countless love stories, but this particular one left a lasting impression.

On Saturday, I had the honour of documenting the beautiful journey of Morgan and James at their Wedding as their videographer. Their love story is a shining example of how love transcends barriers. Morgan, the stunning bride, is partially hearing, while her dashing groom, James ('Jimbo’), and most of their friends and family are not. Despite this, their wedding was a true celebration of love, reminding us that love knows no boundaries.

What made this wedding even more remarkable was the presence of a incredible British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter. With their masterful interpretation, the ceremony seamlessly brought together both hearing and non-hearing guests, creating an atmosphere of unity and inclusion. The interpreter didn't just convey words; they shared the joy, humour, excitement, and passion that filled the air, creating a profound connection.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time I've marvelled at the magic of BSL interpretation. I was moved by the final performance of 'SALT,' a production by Angel Exit Theatre, only a week prior. During this performance, Becky Barry of 'Be My Barry' (@BeckyCBarry), the interpreter, not only signed the dialogue but also delivered an awe-inspiring performance that perfectly captured the play's emotions; she was truly incandescent. Her ability to convey every nuance and feeling was extraordinary, especially considering she had only seen the show twice before. Her performance was so diverse, enchanting and memorising it truly was breath taking and awe inspiring.

Perhaps it's my background in studying non-verbal communication, whilst supporting Autistic adults and children as a Care manager, but these experiences have further enhanced my compassion for total body communication and deepened my admiration for BSL interpreters. Their skill in communicating emotions and intentions through gestures and expressions is truly remarkable. They bring about a form of communication that goes beyond mere words, engaging every fibre of our being. Their dedication bridges divides and showcases the authenticity and pure-heartedness of their work.

Reflecting on Morgan and James' wedding, I'm reminded once again that love is a language that transcends barriers. It's a force that unites hearts, regardless of differences. I'm grateful to have been part of this beautiful celebration, witnessing the power of authentic communication and the magic of connection.

To all the individuals who break down barriers and build connections, thank you for your incredible work. And if you're planning your wedding, I'd be honoured to capture your unique love story, celebrating moments that make your journey exceptional.

With thanks to Morgan & James, Angel Exit Theatre and Becky Barry. Click here to see a clip of Becky's performance.
